Canal View Elementary

A Message From Mrs. Lemcke

Dear Canal View Families,

This has been a wonderful - and busy! - week back to school. We really missed your kids, and it has been so nice to get back into routines and enjoy learning and having fun together again.

This week teachers and counselors have re-anchored into schoolwide expectations as outlined in our PBIS matrix (see below). We know that clear expectations are critical for success, and we appreciate your partnership with supporting your children as they work hard to follow expectations.

Around this time every year, I ask that you complete a VERY short midyear survey to provide us with some critical feedback. There are only two questions -

  1. What do you love about Canal View?
  2. What do you hope for the future of Canal View?

Please click the link below to share your thoughts. All survey results will be reviewed by our Building Planning Team to guide our work and future planning.

I appreciate you and hope that you have a wonderful weekend.

Warmly,
Denise Lemcke
Principal

Pre-Kindergarten Registration and Application Process for 26-27

Believe it or not, it’s already that time of year when we start to turn our attention to “next school year!” With respect to Spencerport’s Pre-Kindergarten program for the 2026-2027 school year, the online registration and application process is now open!

Children who reside in the Spencerport School District, and will be 4 years old on December 1, 2026, are eligible for the program. Parents/guardians can access the online application and additional information about the program here: https://www.spencerportschools.org/cms/one.aspx?portalId=432342&pageId=27904584.

All applications are due by 3:00 PM on Friday, February 20, 2026. If you have any questions or require any support, please call 585-349-5135.

New this year: To be eligible for the lottery, students must also be registered with the district prior to the lottery date set for Monday, March 2, 2026.

Feb. 3: community vote on EV buses

Spencerport will hold a vote on Tuesday, February 3, requesting use of up to $390,000 of our school bus and motor vehicle reserve fund toward the purchase of two zero-emission (electric) buses. I want to take a moment to emphasize the importance of being informed about this vote.

The referendum only determines the use of reserves to offset the taxpayer portion of this cost. This amount, along with state and federal grants, would mean no tax increase. Please visit our website section dedicated to EV buses and this vote.

Emergency Drills

Practicing emergency drills is a regular part of the school experience for students and staff. A number of the following drills are on our schedule throughout the fall, so if you hear your child(ren) talking about something like this, there is nothing to worry about. If our school engages in any real emergency protocols, you will hear from me directly.

  • Hold-in-place: used to limit movement within the school while supporting short-term emergencies
  • Shelter-in-place: used to shelter all students and staff inside the building
  • Evacuation: most commonly known as fire drills, and in addition to getting out of the building quickly and safely, we will practice using emergency window exits and evacuating to our neighboring school, Bernabi
  • Secure Lockout: used to secure the building during incidents that pose an imminent concern outside.
  • Lockdown: used to secure the building during incidents that pose an immediate concern in or around the school.
